Lubbock City Council Sets Property Tax Rate at 58.5 Cents
The July 8 vote locks in the rate that determines annual bills mailed to Lubbock property owners starting in January 2027.
How we reported this
The Lubbock City Council voted 5-2 on July 8 to adopt the fiscal year 2027 property tax rate of 58.5 cents per $100 of assessed value, according to the official minutes released by the city secretary's office.
The rate covers the general fund that pays for police, fire, parks and code enforcement inside the city limits. City finance staff presented the figure during the final budget hearing after reviewing revenue projections tied to the Lubbock Central Appraisal District rolls.
Household cost calculations
An owner of a $180,000 home, the median sale price listed in the 2025 Lubbock Multiple Listing Service data, will owe $1,053 in city property taxes under the new rate. That amount is $27 higher than the bill calculated at the prior 57 cents rate.
The increase appears on the January 2027 tax statement sent by the Lubbock County Tax Assessor-Collector. Renters may see the added cost passed through when landlords adjust leases that renew after September 2026.
Business owners along 34th Street and University Avenue will face the same per-$100 rate on commercial parcels, which the city budget document projects will generate an extra $312,000 in revenue for street resurfacing projects scheduled in 2027.
Next steps for residents
Property owners can protest their appraised values with the Lubbock Central Appraisal District between now and the September 15 deadline listed on the 2026 appraisal notices. The city council is scheduled to certify the final tax roll at its September 22 regular meeting.
Payments can be made in two installments, with the first due by January 31 and the second by July 31, under the schedule published in the 2027 tax collection ordinance.
