Lubbock Free Senior Fitness Classes Start This Week
Lubbock residents aged 60 and older can register for weekly group exercise classes run at no charge by the city Parks and Recreation Department.
How we reported this
The Lubbock City Council approved funding last month for expanded senior fitness programs that began registration on July 1. Classes meet three mornings a week at two city facilities and require no enrollment fee or equipment purchase.
Interest has grown because Lubbock maintains an active wellness culture with many residents walking the trails along Broadway and using the outdoor courts near Texas Tech. City planners noted that the number of Lubbock adults over 65 has increased by 12 percent since the 2020 census, pushing demand for low-cost group activities that keep participants moving safely.
Classes meet at two city sites
Sessions run at the Lubbock Senior Center on 4th Street between Avenue Q and Avenue R, where instructors lead chair yoga and light resistance work on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. A second set of classes takes place at the Mackenzie Park Recreation Center near 34th Street and University Avenue, offering balance drills and walking groups on Monday and Wednesday. Both locations provide shaded parking and water stations during the summer heat.
Participants also gather once a month for a longer outdoor walk that starts at Clapp Park on 19th Street and loops through the Tech Terrace neighborhood before returning to the starting point. City records show 187 seniors signed up for the summer block by the end of the first week of July.
Numbers show steady participation
City data from the previous fiscal year recorded an average of 142 seniors attending at least one session per month across all programs. That figure represents roughly 8 percent of Lubbock residents over 60, according to the most recent Parks Department report released in May. No comparable city-run program charges participants; the entire effort is covered by the general fund allocation of $48,000 approved for the current budget year.
Residents can sign up in person at either center or online through the Lubbock Parks and Recreation portal before each new four-week block begins. The next registration window opens August 1 for classes that start the following Monday. City staff recommend checking the department website or calling the main office at the Civic Center on 19th Street for current availability and any weather-related schedule changes.
